Auto Repair Brand Releases Advice for Drivers in Winter Months
HORSHAM, Pa. – As the weather continues to grow colder and precipitation inhibits travel, Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care does its best to ensure that all drivers are equipped with the best information to keep themselves – and everyone else on the road – safe from harm. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly a third of all fatal accidents occur because of adverse weather conditions. Keep your family safe in inclement conditions with these tips.
Fill Fluids
Filling fluids is an inexpensive but critical way to ensure that your car is in top condition during colder months. Specifically keep an eye on your windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze and oil. Make sure that your wiper fluid is a “winter blend,” which has a higher concentration of alcohol rather than water, meaning it’s less likely to freeze. Additionally, Cottman recommends filling your antifreeze. Finally, check your oil and use your car manufacturer’s recommendation for the proper viscosity oil to use during winter periods.
Don’t Ignore Wiper Issues
Wipers are, of course, important for proper visibility – and when there’s snow, sleet or ice, visibility is already reduced. Try out a pair of winter wipers, which are sturdier and better for the job of getting moisture off your windshield before it seriously impairs your vision.
Be Mindful of Tire Pressure
A reduction in tire pressure is one of the most common ways that cold weather can impact driving – in fact, a temperature change of only 10 degrees can cause as much as 10 percent reduction in the air in your tires. For this reason, it’s important to keep an eye on your tire pressure – it can drastically reduce in short periods of time, especially with a severe temperature drop.
Take Emergency Precautions
If you haven’t already, put together an emergency kit for your car – be sure to include jumper cables, an ice scrapper, small shovel, a flash light, a first aid kit, flares and a battery powered air compressor as well as a blanket, extra hat and gloves and some nonperishable snacks.
